Core Canine and Feline Vaccinations

Core Feline and Canine Vaccines

Vaccinations can protect you and your pet from common diseases. They are preventative, which means they prevent your pet from contracting diseases that would be harmful to them. Some of these, like rabies, can also be transmitted to humans. At Berclair Animal Hospital P.C. in Memphis, we know that vaccines are an important part of responsible pet ownership.

Are Vaccines Good?

There has been controversy over vaccines in recent years. Experts believe that vaccines are a victim of their own success. Since fewer pets contract diseases that are vaccinated against, pet owners often assume there's little risk. Vaccines are good, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association. There is a risk of side effects, as with any medical procedure. However, most are minor. Vaccines are believed to have saved the lives of millions of animals. They also prevent expensive treatments that are often needed if a pet contracts a disease.

Core Feline and Canine Vaccines

Core vaccines are those that are considered necessary. This is determined based on the severity of the disease, the risk of exposure, and the risk of transmission to humans. Non-core vaccines may also be recommended, based on risk factors and your pet's lifestyle.

Core canine vaccines are:

  • canine parvovirus
  • distemper
  • canine hepatitis
  • rabies

Core feline vaccines are:

  • panleukopenia (feline distemper)
  • feline calicivirus
  • feline herpesvirus type I (rhinotracheitis)
  • rabies

Vaccine Schedule

Your veterinarian will help you determine the right schedule for your pet. However, the basic guidelines are puppies and kittens 6-8 weeks of age should receive a series of vaccinations. For adult animals, some vaccines are given annually, and some are given every three years. It is important to schedule all needed vaccinations with your veterinarian. If the schedule is not followed, the vaccines may lose their effectiveness and put your pet at risk.
