Keeping Your Pet Well Groomed and Clean

Keeping Your Pet Well Groomed and Clean

Pet grooming is extremely important if you own a cat or dog. If you are unable to groom your pet on your own, and you would like someone to aid in cleaning your dog or cat, Berclair Animal Hospital P.C. in Memphis can help. We have put together some information about the importance of routine grooming, what you can do at home, and what our groomer will do during a grooming appointment at out veterinarian’s office.

Why Pet Grooming Is Important

If you do not groom your pet, the animal could become ill due to the buildup of bacteria on his or her body. If your pet licks the bacteria, sickness can occur. A pet that is not groomed regularly may often have an odor. The pet may appear unkempt. The fur will likely become matted. Your pet’s eyes may have a crusted coating around them. Some teeth may deteriorate and possibly fall out. Nails or claws will become too long, leading to pain as your pet walks and causing potential injuries if they become snagged in carpeting.

What You Can Do At Home

Make it a priority to comb or brush your pet each week. Spot-check your pet for fleas at this time. Bathing your pet is necessary whenever he or she appears dirty or comes into contact with a skunk or chemical agent. This can be done in a bath of warm water. After bathing your pet, be sure to dry it well. Clip your pet's nails or claws to keep them trim. Check your pet's eyes, ears, and nose for debris and use a wet washcloth to remove it if necessary. You can also brush your pet's teeth with a pet toothbrush and paste. When you brush your pet’s teeth, make sure not to use human toothpaste since some of the ingredients may be harmful to pets.

What Happens During A Grooming Session

Our veterinarian will check your pet's medical condition during the visit. Treatment may be administered if it is needed. Afterward, our groomer will tend to your pet's grooming needs. This includes bathing, nail or claws clipping, and teeth cleaning. If your pet needs grooming, contact Berclair Animal Hospital P.C. in Memphis, TN, to meet with one of our veterinarians.
