Puppy and Kitten Care

If you have recently visited your local humane society to adopt a pet, and you acquired a younger animal, you are likely wondering how to take care of a puppy or kitten properly. If at any time during your pet's upbringing you have concerns or need care tips, contact Berclair Animal Hospital P.C. in Memphis to speak with our veterinarian or schedule a puppy/kitten checkup. We have put together some puppy and kitten care tips to get you started on your adventure with your new pet.

.

Purchase the Right Items for Comfort and Health

Your puppy or kitten will need a few items handy in your home to keep it healthy and comfortable. Head to a pet supply store or order the items online so they are readily available. Your pet will need a feeding dish, water bowl, and wet or dry food. Our veterinarian will make some recommendations regarding dietary choices if you are not sure what to feed your new pet. Pick up a few toys for your kitten or puppy to play with so your pet gets adequate exercise. A puppy will need a leash so you can bring it outdoors without worrying about it running away. A kitten will need a litterbox.

Introduce Your Pet to Your Home and Others Slowly

During the puppy or kitten stage, it is best to allow your pet to only have access to one room at first. This way the animal will become accustomed to the surroundings and will be less likely to become confused or lost. If you have other pets in the home, refrain from allowing them to have contact with your puppy or kitten right away. When you introduce your animals to each other, do so from a distance so they can see each other without the risk of an altercation. In time, your pets will get used to each other's presence and hopefully, like each other.

Contact Our Veterinarian for An Appointment

It is extremely important to have a puppy/kitten checkup as soon as you can schedule one for your new pet. Our veterinarian will check over your pet's health and offer tips for caring for your puppy or kitten as needed. This appointment includes discussing the importance of preventative measures such as parasite control, spaying or neutering, vaccinations, and microchipping.

If your pet has a medical condition that requires intervention, our veterinarian will recommend treatment options for you to consider.
